This copper-nickel issue is minted in .750 copper and .250 nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper. Due to the amount of copper-nickel in it, it is heavy coin, weighing about the same as four quarters; this contributed to its short time in circulation and was often saved as a memento of its namesake.
